Grown in Britain – we are, are you?!

Into 2016, we continue to support the work of the Grown in Britain campaign. We’re flying the flag for growing, sourcing and planting of trees and hedging from British reputable growers and suppliers.  It’s just as important  a consideration for your own gardens as it is for forestry, woodland, farming and landowners.  GiB logo_outlined

The Trees and Hedging team help promote Grown in Britain as a vital collaboration, bringing together everyone who values our forests, woods and trees and their wood products.

The Grown in Britain campaign is driven by the work of Confor, a body responsible for promoting forestry and wood.  The Grown in Britain team work with partners within the Forestry Commission and industry, as well as national government organisations.

You may be surprised to learn that woodland currently only covers 13% of Britain currently.   We can help in create our own woodlands in our own grounds and gardens – imagine the difference if we all planted one new hedge or peppered our gardens with more 50 new young trees and shrubs for ground cover…

Despite these low levels of woodland, the forestry sector and its products still accounts for over £4.1bn of the gross domestic product.  Let’s boost this some more!

You’ll have read about the importance of UK native trees in our recent blog post. The bigger picture is that planting trees and hedging in our gardens, landscapes and UK woodlands brings benefits to the environment, the population and the economy.  Not only does it create natural havens for wildlife, it creates beautiful hedgerows and gardens and healthy outdoor places to visit and explore.  Add to that all the home-grown timber and forestry products to meet home-grown demand and you can see why the Grown in Britain campaign is close to our hearts – and should be to yours!
