We’re proud to be supporting the Grown in Britain campaign

Grown in Britain is the direct result of work by Confor, the body responsible for promoting forestry and wood, following the Independent Panel on Forestry report, which recognised the very significant contribution our woodlands and forests make to our economy, society and the environment.

The report identified the need for a concerted action plan to create a more sustainable future for our woodlands and forests, and for the development of a stronger wood culture amongst our society. Grown in Britain is the core of a comprehensive response to this challenge.

The aims of Grown in Britain are:

1. Create a new and stronger market pull for the array of products derived from our woodlands and forests.

2. Develop private sector funding that supports the planting and management of woodland and forests through funding from businesses as part of their corporate social responsibility.

3. Connect together and harness the positive energy and feelings towards our woodlands and forests that many in our society share to create a strong wood culture. For health, fitness, well-being, community and spirit and to promote the buying of more British woodland derived products.

It is very early days but the pace is fast and the ambition high. The following are just a few of the emerging ideas and initiatives:

  • New projects are being developed to bring hundreds of woods back into management and get that unused yield into the market
  • Big timber buyers/wood product sellers including many household names share the passion and will clearly label British wood they sell
  • Dozens of current projects and initiatives across the sector are being assessed and scrutinised to learn lessons and contribute to promoting Grown in Britain
  • At an event on 20th March 2013, stakeholders including the forestry minister, big organisations and single campaigners identified dozens of new ways to reconnect society to our woodlands
  • 14th of October 2013 will be the start of Grown in Britain week which will be a major celebration of our fantastic range of timber products and our woodland resource

Following all his work on ‘The Panel’, Confor’s Stuart Goodall was delighted when the Secretary of State, Owen Peterson, got behind the initiative and Peter Bonfield accepted the challenge to lead the campaign.

Stuart commented, “We are on the cusp of a major pull in the demand for British grown timber, and our challenge is to invigorate the supply side to meet the demand”
